In my blog post earlier on “Health is wealth” I have listed principles I have followed basis which I have achieved success in terms of losing weight, gaining confidence and staying fit. What I have learned during this phase is that you need to develop a habit of following some healthy lifestyle changes which over the period of time will become a routine without which you won’t be able to kick-start your day.

  • Drink lukewarm water with honey first thing in the morning – This magical drink has substantial effect on my body. In the initial days I needed to put an alarm which reminded me to drink this water as soon as I woke up. After drinking it for few days, I am so used to it that even when I am travelling I still have my warm water to kick-start my day. I feel lucky enough if I get lemon and honey too . This drink has magical properties as it boosts energy, alkalize & detoxify your system, improve functioning of colon and many other such benefits.

In short I will highly vouch everyone to make this one alteration for sure in their lifestyle. In case lemon/honey do not suits you at least start your day with lukewarm water.

Note: I have noticed visible changes in my belly fat too because of this magical drink

  • Healthy and hearty breakfast: It is the most important meal of the day. Even if you don’t get time to eat properly the entire day your body will still remain fit. Now the question was how to eat healthy and that too with less efforts and minimal time for preparation. For that I started to plan my week ahead and list down the groceries, veggies etc needed for my meal preparation. I also researched for some healthy and tasty meal recipes which can be prepared in fifteen minutes time. Some such options are upma, poha, instant idlies, sandwiches etc. Will Blog for these recipes in a separate post. These are easy and tasty recipes which will keep you full and going all day.

 

  • Munching on fruit & nuts: What I also came to know during my research that to stay healthy you need to keep eating every two hours a day. But it became difficult to keep a track of time when you last ate. I then figured out that our body does give us signals that we need to fuel our system to keep going. If we ignore these signs you will notice yourself surrendering to eat anything when your hunger pangs are at peak. To avoid such situations I started to keep dry fruits, roasted fox nut with rock salt & pepper on it (also known as “makhana”), apples, guavas, pomegranate or any other fruit. These snacks are low on calories, have numerous health benefits and helps in maintaining weight too.

 

  • Controlling your portion size: One most important thing which we all tend to ignore is to sit in silence while eating our food. We try to multitask while eating food like watching TV, YouTube videos, reading newspapers etc. I myself used to do this as I felt that it’s boring to just eat food; doing nothing but eating. But when I read in some articles from good nutritionist where they vouched that doing something else while eating make u eat more and hence you fall prey of gaining weight. This made sense to me as we tend to ignore stomach signals of being full and overeat especially if the food is tasty. I tried eating just food for a week without any other activity and observed that I felt full with one and half chapatis only where earlier I used to gobble two and half in a jiffy.

 

  • Eating Dinner latest by 7:30 pm: This mantra I have adopted religiously & hence have observed terrific changes in my body. I woke up lighter, felling refreshed and happy. My dinner is mostly soups, dal with roti, bowl of veggies, veg khichdi, bowl of papaya etc. I try to eat minimum during night as it’s said that we should give rest to our system as it too get tired from the entire day of hard work. Do you feel like working at home when coming back from office? Obviously no! (at least for me it’s true) and hence we search easy options to work less and get rest. Similar analogy work for our stomach too; it too needs rest.

So adopt the principle of “Eat breakfast like a King; lunch like a prince & dinner like a pauper”

  • Sneaking exercise in your day:  This was one thing which I was not able to implement in my lifestyle as being a mom to a toddler with no help at home, I had no options but to devise ideas wherein I could sneak exercises into my day without hitting gym, zumba, or any other aerobic classes. I started moving more for eg. walking while talking, dancing on some songs with my little one, climbing stairs etc. Apart from these lifestyle changes I try to do some strength training exercises on weekend when my hubby is there at home. There are many “ Workout at home” videos available at internet which are motivational and worth doing.

I have seen substantial change in myself following the above principles and these have now become integral part of my lifestyle. Today my will power is strong enough and I do not give up to the temptation of eating junkie food on regular basis. It do not mean that I have completely stopped eating them rather I have them in moderation and do not cross the line which can have adverse effects on my body.

Who doesn’t wants to stay healthy and fit in his life? Am sure everyone does but the demon of “fast paced life” takes all the time and you are left to hog on anything and everything which catches your eyes to satisfy your hunger pangs. One tendency we all have of postponing things on tomorrow saying to ourselves that we will start eating healthy & exercising from tomorrow. Deep within we all know that there is no “Tomorrow”. Remember “Kabir ke Dohe” taught during our school days :-

Act on the principle: “Kaal Kare So Aaj Kar, Aaj Kare So Ub Pal Mein Pralaya Hoyegi, Bahuri Karoge Kub” {Translated in English “Tomorrows work do today, today’s work now If the moment is lost, how will the work be done?}
