How to avoid winter woes affecting your child health!!

Seasonal change brings a sense of discomfort in the mind of mother. Yes! You got me right. I am talking about the monstrous cold and cough, which keeps coming back often, as soon as there is a weather change. One needs to be more cautious especially during winter and monsoon season as the viral infections are at peak.

Being a first time mom, I have learnt and made sure to adopt the below precautionary measures and follow it religiously whenever my little angel is unwell.

  • Protect from weather change:

Kids are more prone to seasonal changes as their immunity levels are low and still developing. Whenever there is moisture in air and chill can be felt, chances of encountering with viruses are high as bacterial infections stay longer in moist environment. In such cases, dress them appropriately and if possible avoid staying outside for longer period.

  • Proper rest:

We all know how difficult it is to make a child sit at one place. But to let him recover faster, make sure to let him rest properly and hence keep distractions at bay. A proper rested kid recovers faster than an active kid.

  • Drink plenty of fluids:

Water is one of the best drink which flushes out all the toxins out of your body. Once you have cold, being dehydrated makes your mucus drier and hence will worsen the situation. Drinking fluids will loosen it and will flush the bacterial infections out.

  • Stay warm during cold season:

Remember granny saying wear your socks and jackets and stay warm else you will have cold. We start shivering once we feel cold wave. Do you know why? It’s a sign from our body indicating its vulnerability to infections. Hence, it’s signaling to layer ourselves to maintain body heat. Since kids are young enough to understand the signal, we need to make sure that we dress them appropriately and keep them warm and cozy.

  • Watch your diet:

Food plays an important role in our lifestyle and hence needs to be customized according to season. Avoid eating and drinking stuffs which have cooling effects like dahi, lassi, bananas, rice etc. when you have encountered cold and cough. I still believe into age old principles and have experienced the change when for that given period these foods were avoided. Nowadays, doctors don’t ask you to make changes into your diet as the antibiotics recommended by them takes care of virus and hence no need to change your diet. However, if you want to avoid medications and adopt home remedies for such infections it’s advisable to take precautions.

Apart from above precautionary tips, hereby I am listing three tried and tested, age old home remedies (also known as “Dadi Maa ke nuske”) which works wonders on my little kiddo.

  • Ginger, Tulsi, honey water:

Ingredients:

½ inch ginger

4 leaves of Tulsi

2 Cloves (Laung) pieces

1 small Cardamon (Elaichi)

2 pc whole black pepper (Kali Mirch)

1 tbsp Honey/ 1 small ball of crystallised sugar lump (Mishri)

1 cup of water

Procedure:

This is very easy and effective remedy to ooze off cold and cough from the body. Put all the above mentioned ingredients in boiling water except honey. Let it boil till you are left with ¼ cup of water. Strain the mixture and mix honey into it. Let your kiddo sip on this water when it’s lukewarm.

Benefits: Immediate relief from cold and cough, No side effects and can be given to little ones above one year of age.

Please Note: If your child is allergic to honey add Mishri to the boiling water to make it sweet so that they will willingly drink it and you don’t need to struggle with them to do so.

  • Turmeric Milk:

 Ingredients:

1 glass cow milk

1 tsp of turmeric

1 tsp honey/mishri (optional)

Procedure:

Turmeric is one of the best antibiotic medicine and perfect cure for cold and cough. Boil Milk and add turmeric into it. Simmer the stove and let it boil for 1 min. Put off the gas and let it sit till it’s lukewarm. Add honey/mishri to it and let your child sip it.

Benefits: Nutritional benefits of milk and turmeric will fight back bacterial infections of cold and cough and will provide relief to the kid. Keep giving it twice a day and you can see the difference.

  • Honey with turmeric:

Ingredients:

1 tsp honey

A pinch of turmeric

1 spoon

Take honey in the spoon and warm it a bit and then mix a pinch of turmeric into it. When it’s warm give it to your little one and see the magic happen. The bacterial infections will start reducing and relieve your little one from sore throat and irritation.

Five simple ways to take care of your Baby Skin!

Motherhood brings joy and happiness in the life of a woman, but along with brings certain fears and apprehensions too. Almost every woman who turns out to be a first time mom, has deep within herself a fear “whether she will be able to take care of her little one all by herself”. Will she be able to hold her and take care of the delicate little angel?

When I became Mom three years ago, I too had such feelings and fear deep within myself. I still remember the day when I held my little one in my arms for the first time, my reaction was “Aww! He is so cute and delicate”. His skin were the softest thing I have ever touched. Babies skin are very sensitive and soft, hence needs utmost care to keep it supple and safe.

Here are the five basic ritual which I followed to keep my baby’s skin soft and smooth:

  • Massage your baby: There are many benefits of massage as it adds flexibility to the body, strengthen bones, develop bonding and makes baby skin soft and supple. The best time to massage your baby is post bath as his skin is hydrated and absorbs the oil or cream properly. It also helps baby to have relaxed sleep and develop better.
  • Use toiletries meant for Baby skin: As you know that skin of baby is completely different from an adult skin and so are the toiletries to be used for them. Make sure that the soaps, shampoos, cream, oils, cleanser, whatever you are using on your little ones are chemical free and safe to use.
  • Be careful of fabrics you use for your baby: Have you ever experienced irritation while you put on clothes such as silk, thick layered clothes during hot and humid season. So just think when you cannot sustain such clothes, how will your delicate little one can. His skin is too delicate and hence you need to “Handle it with Care“! Buy clothes according to season like cottons, muslin cloth which are soft and good to use. Also be sure to use soft wool based woollens when its cold. Make sure whatever you are using on your baby skin for the first time is washed, dried and then used to avoid any bacterial infections.
  • Be vigilant while buying Diaper’s: I feel diaper are one of the best invention done in today’s modern world. We mothers have all liberty to go anywhere round the world without worrying about hygienic toilets. But merely buying diapers of any brand don’t help. Do proper research and decide which brand is suiting your baby’s skin and keeping his skin soft for hours. Generally, a diaper on being wet should not turn hard and should generally remain dry for minimum three to four hours. I have used some brands before putting my little one in Pampers diaper. Pampers brings you the softest ever Pampers Premium Care Pants. Its cotton-like softness is #SoftestForBabySkin and allows it to breathe, thus keeping baby’s skin soft and healthy, and your baby happy.  Also, make sure when you diaper your baby,  you pat dry your baby skin with dry cloth and apply diaper rash cream regularly which prevents diaper rash and will keep his skin soft and supple.
  • Clean and dry all baby skin folds: A new born baby has the most delicate skin and has many folds around his skin. Make sure that you dry and powder his skin properly such as areas behind the ears, creases of his neck, gential area, folds around his legs, so that there is no moisture retention due to hot and humid temperatures. It will help to keep his skin free from infections and rashes.

Do note that, it is not easy to keep baby skin soft and beautiful as it seems so. A religious routine of above steps will ensure healthy and happy little one. I am till date maintaining this routine with slight changes as my little one is a toddler now, but still his skin is soft and safe.

This Little Light of Mine!!

Smiles

Life is unpredictable and we never know what is in the store for us, the coming second. Then also we keep planning for future anticipating good in every damn thing. Ever imagined why and from where such spirit comes to us?  It’s because each one of us has a reason to do so, as we have a ray of light which keeps beaming from darkness and make us keep planning and deciding a better life ahead.

For every person this definition of “The Little Light” can be different and can vary too in various stages of their life.  I remember when I was in my teenage years, for me being a successful professional, liberty of buying whatever I desired, dining out and hanging out with friends were the only desires which kept me going and struggling to achieve my path towards success. So, I can say “MY DESIRES” was the “The Little Light of Mine” which motivated deep within me to achieve success. Today I am a Chartered Accountant with all luxuries of life which I dreamt of.

But, when I am a mother, I think that “The Little Light of Mine” has changed from “My Desires” to “The Smiles” of my dearest ones. I think I have evolved in my stage of life and can now better understand and judge my priorities and happiness. I feel that material things do bring happiness, but they don’t last long. Have you experienced a smile which came on other person’s face because of you? If not, then do try it once. It brings peace along with happiness, which lasts longer and refills us with instant energy, and keeps us going.

Health is Wealth! Are you actually minting your wealth?

It’s said “Health is Wealth” but how many of us follow this religiously? In this busy world and fast pace of life, health falls in last category, be it man or woman. We tend to ignore the basic priority – “to nourish our body” so that we can stay healthy and fit. Ever wondered why is it so? I think it’s because we have never considered it on our chart as our basic priority. We all know that we shouldn’t eat without brushing our teeth as it’s harmful for health. But have we ever thought that eating junk food or skipping meals or not exercising will take toll on our health? Definitely we all think so, but we never strive, or say, push ourselves to “Eat healthy and Stay healthy“. I think one reason can be that we have not followed the principle to eat healthy or to exercise since childhood (at least for me it’s true).

But as said “Jab Jaago Tab Savera” (React when you Realise), we should join hands with our partner/loved ones and start following a healthy regimen to avoid unnecessary popping of pills and visit to doctor.

Obesity is a major health issues faced by six out ten people in India, out of which majority will be woman. The reason being she is the one who is the soul of the house. Every single person depends on her, be it for guidance, sustenance or affection. She multi-tasks easily, keeping everyone around happy and her needs last.

I too being woman shared same compassion of multi tasking and keeping everyone around fit and healthy. But I have never realized the fact that in this journey, post marriage I have gained love but am losing my health. I became obese (was 25kgs overweight), suffered from migraine attacks, started falling frequent sick etc. Its been since an year back when I realised that being healthy is not for me but for my family too. How can I keep someone else healthy unless I myself is not fit and fine. I committed myself to regular exercise and eating healthy food which started showing on me and I lost 15 kgs of weight.

I just came across an initiative started by Saffola Life #ProtectHerHeart in which they have listed facts on improving heart health and are trying to spread awareness to keep your heart healthy and you going. I have read many books and researched a lot by reading articles and posts over internet and learnt that slight changes in your lifestyle makes lot of difference on your health. I am listing some slight changes which I have incorporated into my daily routine and which has helped me to improve my heart and keep my family healthy and active.

  • Walk when you talk. By saying this I mean, try to move as much as possible. Don’t sit for hours at one place. Small steps makes lots of difference. Also, it will be great if you can take out half an hour from your daily schedule and walk. It helps in reducing risk of chronic diseases such as heart diseases, asthma, diabetes etc.
  • Use Less Oil: We all know that consumption of oil in generous quantities increases risk to serious diseases. Let me tell you, oil do not has a taste of its own, it just allows spices and food to blend together and hence enhances the taste of food. I follow a ritual of using one teaspoon of oil for one person and cook food accordingly. I should tell you, food tastes delicious irrespective of less oil in it.
  • Drink 2-3 litres of water a day: Make sure that you drink 2-3 litres of water a day as it allows to flush toxins out of our body and keep hydrated. Do you know, times when you feel the urge of hunger, its actually when you are thirsty and end up eating something unhealthy. So tune yourself to water and make sure you drink it too in short intervals.
  • Incorporate colors in your food: Make sure while you are eating food, your plate is full of colors. By saying a colorful plate I mean to say that you should consume combination of all vegetables, curd, milk and fruits. Your diet should include  food rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins and fiber.

What you are eating makes lot of difference to your health, but it do not mean that you can ignore the importance of workout as the ratio of food:workout is 70:30. While you workout, blood flow increases and your heart pumps faster making it healthy and stay strong.

So stay committed to yourself and pledge within to “Eat healthy and Stay healthy

Health

“I am joining the Saffolalife #ProtectHerHeart initiative and pledging my support to better heart health in Association with BlogAdda.”

How I Lost It and still losing!

Everyone knows that motherhood brings joy in life of a woman, but another truth is that it brings sorrows too. Now you must be wondering, what am I talking about. If you are Mom, am sure you must have guessed it. Yes! I am talking about the most worried topic “Weight”. Every woman who has entered into motherhood, post delivery has one big agenda on her chart and that is “Weight loss”.

Some mothers manage to loose it easily while some take months or even years to loose those extra kilos. I am a mother who falls under the second category. My little brat is now three years old and am still struggling to shed my kilos of weight. No am not saying that I have not succeeded in doing so, I am on a right path and the feeling of getting back in your old clothes can be felt, can’t be explained.

I had lost some of my pregnancy weight when my brat was one year old but in vain. I gained double the weight of what I have lost because I am foodie and can’t resist seeing lip-smacking food. Every day I used to vow with myself “I am going to start my exercises and diet from tomorrow”, which never came. I have not understood, how weird I looked till one day my friend pointed towards my bulging tummy and I felt really shy about it.

Then and there I decided to be serious and took my first step towards losing weight. I started going on morning walks but irrespective of walking continuously for an hour for three months my weight has not gone down by 100 gms. I was disheartened on seeing no results on scale, irrespective of my hard efforts (according to me getting up at 5 am and brisk walking is an effort 🙂). Fortunately, I did not loose hope as I read many articles, books and researched on internet which busted many myths which I had in my mind about losing weight.

Here I am listing those myths which acts as a mental block and deter one from losing weight:

  • Weight can’t be lost without hard core exercise: Exercise is necessary to get rid of toxins and rejuvenate our body so we remain fit to function all day long. Whenever one does any activity the rate of pumping blood increases which helps in improving our stamina and metabolic rate of body.  It is like oiling your vehicle to help it remain in good shape. Surely it helps in weight loss but is not the sole factor on which one can loose weight. I myself did brisk walking for an hour for three months but have not lost 100 gms 😦 (reason I relied solely on it 😉 ) Hence, the thought that exercising for hours will help to loose weight is a myth.
  • One needs to go on strict diet to shed kilos: What comes in mind on the word “DIET”. Am sure everyone visualises boiled veggies, bland soups, fruits and food made with almost no taste. Definitely you will loose eating such food but can you survive till horizon being on it itself? Just tell me how long can you eat it? I myself can’t and hence never lost till I busted out that it’s a myth. You can loose and that too by eating what you love, the only key being (a) control your portion size and (b) Stop eating till full after dusk.
  • Avoid eating food rich in carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are a source of energy to our body. It fuels our body with essential nutrients to keep us going. So eliminating carbs from diet is going to leave you dull and lethargic. One needs to eat all good carbs, proteins, vitamins and minerals in appropriate portions to allow our body to function properly. I started eating carbs first thing in the morning to boost my energy levels after a night long fast and reduced its intake as dawn turned to dusk. It meant, I ate all carbs rich food like potatoes, upma, poha, sabudana khichdi and still lost weight.
  • STOP eating sweets: It is true that eating sweets on a daily basis is not good for helath and weight. But completely eliminating from your diet is no good either (especially if you have a sweet tooth ;)). Since sweets are mostly made with refined sugar and loads of ghee, it is said to avoid it to loose weight effectively. But this never means that you need to stop eating it completely. I am not a person who has sweet tooth but then also there are some sweets on which I just can’t resist myself such as gulabjamun and jalebi. I try to eat it before noon so my taste buds are happy and my weight is also in check (Tummy khus aur mummy khus 😉)
  • Being on liquid diet makes you loose weight: I read it somewhere that being more on liquids help to loose weight. Surely it does, but the irony is as soon as you start eating you will gain double the weight lost (principal returned with interest 😉 ). One should drink around 2-3 litre of water in a day to let body flush out the impurities but being on liquid diet is like keeping body out of nourishment.

I started my weight loss regimen a year back and have lost fifteen kilos till date. I know that I have lost it really slow but the loss is stagnant. One thing I can bet, if you are eating healthy with portion size in check and exercising daily for 30 minutes in a day, no one can stop you from achieving your ideal weight. I would like to thank my friend (Vandana Das)  who always inspired me to join workout regimen which actually helped me a lot.

My mantra of losing weight is:

Please Note: I was thinking since long to write about my weight loss journey but was tempted to write one today when I saw 30 Day Fitness challenge started by World of Moms. It is an amazing information site for all mothers/would be mothers.

Is it good to impart Free Advice?

The literal meaning of Advice is “guidance or recommendations offered with regard to prudent action“.  Every being, be it a baby, adult or an old person, everyone needs guidance to move ahead in life. Life is not a bed of roses, it is mix of joys and sorrows which keep the spirit of your existence alive. When in joy, you don’t need any support or advice while you dread one badly when in pain. Isn’t it?

Now the question arises, whom do we seek advice from? Obviously from our near and dear ones. They may be our relatives, friends, neighbors, anyone with whom we love to share our thoughts and seek right path to cross over. At times, these advice are sought for, while sometimes they are given to you for free. Everybody loves to get things which are “FREE“.  But is the case same when it comes to advise somebody for future actions? Do people love what we say to them? Are they actually going to follow your perspective and act upon it? We never think these aspects, before reacting and a free advice flow out of our mouth. Is it a correct way to impart advice? Should we actually give free advice?

I too have never thought on these aspects of “Free Advice” till one day when one of my good friend, has warned me ” Not to give free advice to anyone, until and unless asked for“. We had an argument on this, and I gave up pondering over the fact that ” Things which people get FREE, actually don’t hold importance“. This#SachchiAdvice has really impacted me from within.

It’s rightly said:

Free advice

Am sure you too will agree with me on this. What say?#
